I have always been anaemic, but since having my gallbladder out my haemoglobin levels have gone down really severely. A normal level is about 12-14, and my levels are under 7.

In the past I have always taken iron supplements that did nothing to increase my haemoglobin levels, and also call transfusions which did work, but now since the gallbladder operation the levels have shot straight back down.

My GP referred me to the hospital to have a gastroscopy and colonoscopy. I'm not at all worried about the colonoscopy and I have had several of them done before, but I am worried about the gastroscopy.

They offer you the choice of either having this spray on the back of your throat (which is supposed to prevent gagging) along with gas and air, or you can choose to be sedated.

As I'm anxious naturally anyway, I have opted for the sedation, but I don't know if I can also have the anti gagging spray. It makes me gag even at the dentists, so I know that this is going to make me gag a lot.

I have had polyps removed from my colon before, as they would have turned into cancer if they were left, so they are checking again for them, and also for anything in my stomach, of which they apparently take some tissue samples.

Has anyone had one of these done before? Any advice greatly appreciated!

I won't be having an anaesthetic, it will just be a sedation, last time I had the colonoscopy done it was IV midazolam. It requires more people to administer a general anaesthetic, which costs more money, which, along with GA having added health risks, is why I imagine they only use sedation.

I asked a nurse today about why I cannot have the throat spray and the sedation, and she thought that if the spray stops you gagging, it might cause breathing problems if you were sedated as well. Some people do get knocked out with the sedation, but I never do, so perhaps when they see that I am still wide awake they will let me have the spray as well.

What problems were you having posting earlier?

Hi, I got your message, & just now read this and I had forgotten you are in another country so I guess your medicine works differently than ours, in one area or another, since I would just call the anesthesiologist..  Can you also call the person who administers the IV midazolam if other people gag and explain that you will probably fight it if you gag, (certainly you would not want to fight it, but if discomfort or a feeling of not being able to breathe is the result, you might.

That might get the truth out of them, or they might be willing to go into it understanding you need more,  since surely not everyone has a perfect experience.  I have been through some horrid gagging experience when I was younger, especially the forced stomach pumping when I was real young which has haunted me all of my life so I would be freaked also.  I think you are smart to LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE STILL AWAKE IN FACT KEEP TALKING  or keep being a "problem" such as moving etc, and perhaps they will give you more midazolam, that is, whatever your level of the stuff is to be put to sleep..  I have done that at the dentist's office when I knew that I was not at all affected by the gas and they kept giving me slightly more, cautiously. I just did not want to walk in there and say "Hi , I have a high tolerance"  but if you have the nerve to do so, I suggest it, because they will have a more cooperative patient if you are still and not gagging or suffering
I guess they are looking for an internal bleed to explain your anemia?

Mine is not rescheduled yet.  It was for Mar 27, which has come and gone. We didn't realize my husband's surgery would render him unable to drive me home, and you have to have someone drive you home, not a taxi and I don't have so many people I could have called for such a favor.. as we did when younger and we could both go out more often, have ppl over, etc.

Good luck.  Please let us know about the experience.  I think you seem pretty calm about it, actually.
Oh, my posting problems were to do with my own computer, I could not get on AOL, through the software I have on my computer,  That is how I usually get on here, and it won't hook up to the Internet.. So I came directly to the browser this time. (and yesterday when I figured out what the problem was)

Ok, so I spoke to the nurse of the doctor that will be providing the sedation. It's not an anaesthetist as it's not going to be an anaesthetic, just some IV midazolam or diazepam. They said the reason that you usually cannot have the sedation and the gag spray is that if you're too sedated and have the gag spray ot can affect your breathing apparently.

They have said that if I have the sedation and do not appear too sedated (which I know I won't, the sedation never usually does that much too me, even when I have like 3 x the normal dose) then I can have the spray as well.

The consultant that is doing the procedure is the same one that has done all my previous colonoscopies and polyp removal, so he does know that the sedations don't affect me that much, so I'm pretty confident that he'll let me have the spray as well.

When I had the 1st procedure with him, I did tell him that I have a high tolerance so the sedation might not have much affect, and he ended up giving me 4 x the usual dose and I still was not even close to being asleep!

Apparently even though it's not an anaesthetic, you still need someone to collect you afterwards. My husband was going to wait, but it says in the paperwork that you might be there 3 hours, so I wouldn't want him hanging around that long!

I too am very tolerant to sedation medications....

And I feel it is because of anxiety....I have to be sedated to have MRI's.....I am having anxiety right now even writing about if.  The Tunnel is too small they put me in and as soon as it stops rolling me into it I began freaking out....Well the get so aggravated with me because they see the sedation a waste....Well it's not to me.  I even would agree to pay cash for it if I could sometimes they let me and sometimes they say it is not possible..BS on that..... paying for it is always an option unless they think or know you to be an addict then it becomes non optional which I do not understand I am not asking for a script for sedation to take with me...lol.  I only ask for it during the procedure...Spp then it rolls down to well this might be a relapse trigger etc...Well I can relapse without a trigger from them.  I HAVE TRIGGERS EVERYDAY.

LOL, you made me think of what happened before I lost al this weight. I nearly did not fit into the MRI tunnel because I was spilling off the sides of the platform that goes back into the machine with you on it. It was really embarrassing.

I'm the same as you, even though I know that the sedation will not work any where near as good on me as normal people, I still want to have it done!! It does help as far as it feels better than having the procedures done without it, iyswim?!
